Biometric border control of the European Union

The EU is implementing a new entry/exit system into the EU, the so-called EES to increase border security. The system requires non-EU citizens to register fingerprints and facial images when entering the Schengen area.

As of today, there have been delays in the implementation of the EES. The system is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2024, probably at the beginning of October.

The system's original opening date was pushed back due to technical challenges and France's requests to avoid disruption to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
